APEOS is a project focused on developing an innovative process to enhance the sustainability of Prato’s recycled textile sector, in line with the European Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles.

Partnership

  • Comistra srl – LEAD PARTNER
  • FILATI OMEGA S.R.L.
  • Progetto Lana SRL
  • L.A.I.P. S.R.L.
  • Fondazione PIN – Prato Campus, University of Florence

Project Duration: May 2025 – March 2026

The project aims to tackle a significant challenge in Prato’s textile industry: the presence of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs), chemical compounds regulated at the European level due to their impact on human health and the environment. These substances, still found in recycled fabrics, pose a concrete obstacle to the circular economy model that defines the Prato textile district.

Circular future for the textile industry

The goal of the project is to identify innovative and sustainable solutions to remove APEOs from recycled textiles. In particular, the use of ozone — a powerful oxidant already used in wastewater treatment — will be studied to assess its effectiveness on fabrics. The project also includes the development of a prototype treatment system and a digital platform to monitor environmental and economic impacts.

The initiative brings together local textile companies (Progetto Lana and Filati Omega), with Comistra as lead partner, the technology company LAIP, and the research center PIN, combining industrial and scientific expertise to create a safer, more innovative, and circular future for the textile industry.

PR FESR 2021–2027
